Free Grant Money For Home Repair and Improvement

The government provides free grant money for a lot of different reasons, and home repair grants are one of the many ways that American citizens can take advantage of these programs. Depending on the programs your local community government offers, and the state or federal grant programs you choose to apply for, you could receive the cash you need to fix and update your home for free.

What exactly does it mean to get money for free? Just that. When obtained, this is cash that you can spend and will never be asked to pay it back. That is, of course, as long as you use the funds for the intended purpose of the grant.

You can visit your City Hall to check with your local government agencies and inquire about the home grants that you may qualify for. Some of the grants that are available will provide you with the cash you need to completely rehabilitate your house or even expand your home. Other grants may help you pay for labor or material costs. In some cases you may simply receive a tax credit for installing energy efficient appliances.

Whatever the case, there are numerous government grants available, and home improvement grants are just a small sliver of the money that has been allocated to be given away. And since this is money that never has to be repaid, it may very well be worth some minimal effort in finding the cash that is available for you to claim.

Attic Ventilation – Ensuring Enough Attic Air Circulation

Your home has a number of critical areas that need all the attention they could get. The attic for instance, plays an important role in ensuring that your roof lasts as intended. Proper air circulation of the attic is essential in keeping that the roof remains structurally sound over the years. You can determine whether there is adequate ventilation in the attic or if it is lacking. If you happen to notice some sort of musky smell in the attic, it is often not caused by the items being stored, but because of insufficient airflow. Fans are commonly used to resolve this problem. However, do roof ventilation fans work? Let’s find out.

How can I know that there’s enough air circulation in my attic?

Your attic, like most areas of your home, requires proper air circulation. There different ways on how to achieve enough airflow in this particular area. A homeowner can buy ventilation solutions in the market of apply different techniques to ensure there is sufficient air flowing through the attic.

What are my options?

Should you find signs of poor ventilation in your attic, you should consult professionals immediately. The sooner you find and fix the problem, the better it is for your home. There are a number of solutions available, but there is no single solution for everything. The homeowner or the professional paid to fix the problem must assess what type of solution would work best and for the long-term. Here’s a number of solutions for your home:

1. Ridge vent – this type of solution is, as its name suggests, a vent installed along the ridge line of your house. Before this type of vent is installed, roof decking is cut to allow air to flow through. It is highly essential that no other areas of the home block air from coming in or out.

2. Soffit vents – every roofing system needs to have air entry and exit points to keep it cool and dry. The soffit vents also work in conjunction with ridge vents and let air pass right through. However, in areas where the roofline meets the attic floor, insulation baffles must be put in place to prevent airflow from being restricted.

3. Attic fans – this solution is quite better as it does not rely on natural wind to ventilate the attic. Fans can be installed on the roofing system which sucks the air out when needed. Some newer models incorporate a thermostat which automatically turns on the fans to keep a stable temperature in the attic. Solar powered fans are also available, which would be beneficial since this would mean the fans can be self-sufficient. However, the costs associated with this solution raises a couple of questions. So, do attic ventilation fans work at all? The answer is yes.

As it is commonly known, fans dedicated to ventilate can easily introduce air or push air out of a home with ease. Unlike natural, free-flowing systems, these fans work at a much more efficient pace. There’s also the option for users to control the temperature within certain areas to prevent moisture buildup and other problems caused by stale air.

Types of Carpeting

Carpeting can be made with a variety of different fibers. These fibers have different characteristics that will drastically effect the way the carpet performs. Read along to find out about the three most common types of fibers used in carpeting.

The first material I will discuss is Olefin or Polypropylene. Olefin is generally a lower end carpeting but it does have several good qualities. For example, it absorbs very little moisture, less than 1%. This can make it hard to stain. Olefin is also usually solution died which means that the color runs all the way through the fiber and it can not be bleached. It unfortunately has many drawbacks as well. One of which is the fact that Olefin is a soft fiber. This may sound good, since everyone wants a nice soft carpet, but it is not. Olefin being soft, will crush and wear easily giving it a shorter life than other fibers. It also attracts grease like a magnet. Within a year or two an Olefin carpet will often develop dark traffic paths that are difficult or impossible to clean. Choose this type of carpet if you only need a carpet that lasts a few years or if you will be putting it into a rental.

The next fiber and probably the most popular is Nylon. Nylon is more expensive but it doesn’t have the drawbacks of Olefin. It is a harder fiber and thus resist wear better. It also does not attract grease as much so you do not get the dark traffic areas as quickly as Olefin does. Nylon does absorb moisture however making it possible to stain. It is also usually died after it is made so it can be bleached. Choose this type of carpet if you are looking for a long lasting carpet. Clean it often and apply a carpet protector to prevent stains.

The last type of fiber I will discuss and the most expensive of the three is wool. Wool is of course a natural fiber and has many good qualities. It is both soft and durable. It is not uncommon for a good wool carpet to last twenty or even thirty years. One of the negatives of wool is that it can be stained easily so if you get it, be sure to have a carpet protector applied. This type of carpet is probably for you is price is no option and you want a beautiful and long lasting carpeting.

While there are other varieties of carpet available like silk, cotton and polyester, these are the three most popular. Look at the features of each carefully before you make your decision and you will reduce the risk of regretting your next carpet purchase.

House Smart Resolutions for the New Year

We’re always making annual promises to lose weight, start exercising or quit smoking, but what about setting goals for the home? Getting our wishes down on paper helps to solidify plans and make things happen.

Here are some ideas to start with, see if you can add your own to the list.

Paint your home green

You faithfully recycle, but you’ve never tried composting, maybe it’s time to start thinking about more ways to create a green household. Try switching to non-toxic cleaners or organic foods. If everyone does a little…

Finish that basement

Create a project plan to finally renovate the basement. Start by designing a floor plan, determine wall and floor coverings, and then add associated costs to create a budget. Now you have a place to start.

Invest in some quality furniture or accents

Plan on how you can spend less in one area of your life in order to save for something you’ve always wanted, such as a piece of artwork or a matching bedroom set.

Time to smart-size

Downsizing or smart-sizing is becoming more and more common as children are moving out and going to college. Those large family homes are being traded in for smaller more efficient models that take less of our time and money.

Get organized

Organizing your home has a way of no cluttering your mind as well as your closets. Mentally it is easier to function in an atmosphere of clarity and order. This may be as simple as cleaning out the closets or purchasing some bookcases or other items to help you feel more organized.

It’s picture time

How about those old photographs, wouldn’t they look great displayed in an album? Maybe take another look through the digital photos and print some off (they may even make great Christmas gifts).

Take the extra special photos, have them enlarged, find some funky frames and make a collage of images. Display them in themes using color or black and white.

Overview of Utility Locating Services

Before the start of any project – construction or excavation, it is wise to perform utility locating on the site. This is the first step that has to be done if you are planning a project that will require digging up through the ground.

Hiring professionals to map underground utilities will lead to speeding up the construction project. You no longer have to dig carefully and slowly. It is always better to prevent a problem to occur than to handle it. We are able to see, localize and identify the type of utility in the ground, using advanced methods. There are several reasons why utility locating has to be performed before any project. They all point to delivering time, money and safety:

  • Localization of utility lines for further planning
  • Preventing interruption during work
  • Avoiding repair costs…

Except identifying underground utilities, you will get a full covering of your storage tanks, gas pipes and voids. You’ll want to scan for any dangerous materialĀ in the ground, that can be harmful to anyone who will be digging through. Having a full coverage package means no need to worry further.

Do you know that some of the utility lines can be re-routed or placed in a different location? Many of them might be old or not effective anymore. So, you need to replace those old utility lines with new ones. This can be done by utility company who has a lot of experience in the field.

Water and utility lines may not cause more damage than power lines can do. However, the interruption will be the same. This will lead to more delays, repair costs and legal consequences. Electromagnetic equipment is used for detecting signals from beneath the ground. Power lines can be detected anytime, regardless of the season. This is not a case for identifying water lines because they sometimes require a combination of different methods: electromagnetic method or Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) or both of them. This radar uses a high-frequency radio signal that is transmitted into the ground and then the signals are returning back to the recipient in a digital form.

During construction excavation, locating the utilities before you start is a best practice. Damaging any critical utility services such as water and power lines or gas piping during construction is costly and most probably dangerous. Just think that something as simple as digging a hole to plant a tree has a potential to damage a property or even cause a loss of life.

Everything You Need To Know Before Buying a Mobile Home

Mobile homes have an unfair reputation for being low quality or trashy. That just isn’t true. A mobile home is a great way to get your own property, place it anywhere you choose and for less than many more stationary houses tend to cost. It is becoming an increasingly popular option, with variations such as tiny homes and mini cottages becoming a darling of the real estate world.

If you are reading this you are probably considering making a purchase yourself. Before you go shopping for the perfect little place of your own, here are some things you should know.

There Are Many Kinds of Mobile Homes

Mobile homes are not all the same single level family affair that you may be used to. There are multiple styles and types, as the couple mentioned above prove. Tiny houses are miniature homes that attempt to utilize every inch of space, all in a very small package. Mini cottages are similar, though usually one room wood houses with lofts.

There are also multi-level mobile homes. These are less portable, which makes them a mixed bag. But if you are looking to get a manufactured home and you aren’t concerned with being able to move it quite as easily it is definitely a good option.

If portability is your goal there are models that come on wheels, which can be either kept on at all times or slipped under with some tools.

The Cost of Mobile Homes Can Vary Wildly

With so many mobile home styles it probably won’t surprise you that these dwellings don’t come in a standard price range. According to Forbes, the average cost of a tiny house is around $23,000. But the average cost of a single story mobile home is around $64,000. Multi-level manufactured homes can vary, but you can assume between $50 and $100 per square foot.

The varying prices is one reason that it is important to know what it is you are looking for in a home. You should also consider other costs that are associated with your house. The land that you are building it on, for example, or the hook up costs for electricity, plumbing, gas, etc. These may not be built into the price and so require additional installation and fees.

Quality Is a Factor

Not all mobile homes are created equal. In fact, going to the wrong provider can end in some serious headaches. A major storm can topple it over or damage can be done to the exterior, pieces can fall off, etc. It is critical that you find a reputable dealer or construction crew to help you find the right mobile home.

You are looking for quality materials, designs and reputable reviews for who you work with. If you find all three you will wind up with a beautiful, sturdy home.

Manufactured or Prefabricated Homes Are Awesome

These style of houses are fantastic. Not only are they lower cost than from scratch models, but they are easier and faster to put up. A crew as small as two people can construct a manufactured or prefabricated mobile home, using pretty basic tools. Sometimes it can be done in as little as an afternoon.

That is because the pieces are already put together and ready to combine. They have been shipped from the factory with everything needed, to the location you specify. So the people putting it up just have to go through and hook all the parts, from the walls and foundation to the different compartmentalized rooms and features.

Getting a Loan Can Be Tricky

When you are getting a mortgage you go to a bank, right? Most mobile homes won’t qualify under mortgage programs. Instead you have to either go through an official mobile home company that specializes in financing, or you have to go through a credit union that has a loan specifically for this style of house.

The idea is that mobile homes are portable and many people mistake that to mean temporary. They are also lower cost, so there is less profit gained through interest rates. Many banks don’t see the point of funding them.

Thankfully, it isn’t hard to get a loan from one of these specified places. If you have an account with a credit union it is all the better, as that improves your odds of approval and they often have competitive rates.

Location Is Everything

You could have a gorgeous, well crafted, amazing mobile home. But if it is sitting on an ugly lot in the middle of a crowded area, what good it is? You want a location that is central to what you need, but still pretty, functional and offers you whatever you are looking for. Some people choose mobile parks in order to have a neighborhood feel. Others choose more isolated locations where they can enjoy a plot of land.

Whatever works for you, location is a pretty important part of buying your mobile home. It is also a good chunk of what you will be paying for. Renting land is possible, such as in mobile parks. But buying your own ensures you have greater equity in your property. It is a sound investment, even if you plan on uprooting and moving somewhere else. Land is also cheaper than you might expect, depending on the area.

Retail Cost Versus Invoice Cost

Once you know what you are looking for and where you are going, it is time to go to a reputable dealer. When dealing with closing costs make sure you ask to see the invoice cost of the property. If they resist, insist on it or possible go to someone else. This is a better representation of cost without inflation that can come from retail markups.

Don’t let them corner you into telling your budget or what you can pay monthly. Just have them give you flat invoice prices for a described model and then negotiate based off of that price.

Realizing one’s strengths and weaknesses before they undertake a project too difficult will help them save money and a great deal of time. How to Make Your Home a Quieter Place

The houses today are constructed on the basis of modern, light-weighted and open-floor plans wherein it becomes difficult to find a little peace and quiet environment. In most of the houses, the walls are removed to increase the available space, kitchens are filled with larger appliances, and rooms are surrounded by home theaters making noise an essential part of our lives. We are the only creators of a noisy environment and we can only help ourselves in reducing it. This is not something that is created by nature it is simply a man-made product.

The evil effects of noise are that it can mess up your sleep, add to your stress, infringe on your privacy and in a nutshell it is hampering the quality of life we are living. Fortunately, we are lucky that there is a number of soundproofing or acoustic treatments that you can take help from to alleviate the problem. The acoustic barriers can efficiently help folks to get rid of this serious issue. Before, we proceed it is also important to know how sound actually works?

The clang of the bell and other physical things sends sound waves rippling through the ear. When these waves reach the ears, they vibrate a sensitive membrane i.e. the eardrum and we hear them as sounds. It is said to be the sound, not the noise. Noise is something that is unpleasing to the ears and is also termed as unwanted sounds.

Here are some helpful techniques for making your home a quieter place:

  • Cut down on noisemakers- Consider buying quiet appliances for your home including house fans, kitchen appliances etc. Buying quiet appliances is even more beneficial if they are to be kept nearby living or sleeping areas. Maintenance of existing appliances is also an important part of the equation. If you find something unusual, get it checked or repaired by the technician as soon as possible.
  • Use sound absorbing materials- The material that helps to reduce and absorbing the unwanted sound are something that every house owner would love to have. There are a lot of things that will work as a barrier that reflects and absorbs the noise entering your house. These acoustic barriers are quite helpful in minimizing the outdoor noises and absorbing the interior sounds. Ensure getting a spec sheet prepared by the tradesman so that you can check and approve it before its installation.
  • Install sound blocking doors- The largest opening in a house is its doorway. And a lot of sounds enters from this way. Thus, it is better to install weatherstrip or solid doors to effectively block the unwanted sound rays entering your house. The solid doors are quite expensive because of their thickness and are also available in a broader selection of elegant designs.
  • Weatherstrip interior doors- The actual sound doesn’t come through the door, it comes around the hollow spaces left between the doors. Thus, it is beneficial to install weatherstripping or door soundproofing to seal that space using adhesive-backed high-density foam tape. This will block the noise coming from outside.
